Boxing Training for Parkinson’s in Sandton — Non-Contact. Coached With Care.

Urban Warrior Boxing Gym is based in Parkmore, the heart of Sandton. Non-contact boxing has become one of the most widely used forms of exercise support for people living with Parkinson’s worldwide — our coaches bring that same approach to Sandton.

Why Boxing?

Nobody in this programme gets hit — this is entirely non-contact. What boxing offers is a rare combination: footwork that challenges balance, combinations that demand focus and coordination, and a rhythm of training that engages the body and mind together. Gyms and community programmes around the world have built dedicated coaching around exactly this, and it’s an approach we’ve brought to our own coaching here.

This is not medical treatment, and our coaches are not medical professionals — what we bring is boxing coaching, adapted thoughtfully for this population. We work alongside whatever care you’re already receiving, never in place of it.

What Our Coaching Focuses On
Boxing bag training for balance and coordination for Parkinson's Sandton

Balance & Coordination

Footwork and reactive drills that challenge balance and hand-eye coordination in a controlled, supportive setting — building on skills many people find useful for day-to-day movement.

Strength training with weight plates for Parkinson's Sandton

Strength & Mobility

Gentle, structured movement work that keeps muscles engaged and joints moving through their full range — adapted session by session to how you’re feeling that day.

Boxing training for mental focus and connection for Parkinson's Sandton

Focus & Connection

Combinations and cues that keep the mind engaged round after round, in a one-on-one setting built on encouragement — not pressure, not comparison.

Also Used to Support Arthritis, Osteoporosis & Stroke Recovery

Parkinson’s is our main focus, but boxing training is backed by real research for a wider range of conditions common in later life. Here’s specifically how it may help, condition by condition.

Boxing training adapted for arthritis Sandton

Arthritis

Controlled, rhythmic movement — footwork, pad work, guided range-of-motion drills — is exactly the kind of joint-friendly exercise increasingly recommended for arthritis. It keeps joints moving without the harsh impact of higher-contact sports, and the muscle you build around a joint helps take pressure off it. Intensity and range of motion are adapted to what feels right on the day.

Boxing training adapted for osteoporosis and bone density Sandton

Osteoporosis

Bone gets stronger under load — footwork, pivots and bag work are all weight-bearing, impact-based movement, which is exactly the mechanical stress bone tissue responds to. It’s why boxing-style training has shown measurable improvements to bone density in published research, not just general fitness benefit.

Coach wrapping hands before training for stroke recovery and balance Sandton

Balance After a Stroke

This one has real clinical trials behind it — several published studies have used structured boxing training specifically with stroke survivors and recorded genuine improvements in balance, coordination and confidence in daily movement. Sessions work with whatever strength and range you have on each side, never against it.

Before You Start

Please get clearance from your doctor, neurologist or specialist before beginning any new exercise programme — whether that’s for Parkinson’s, arthritis, osteoporosis, stroke recovery or anything else. Once you have the go-ahead, tell your coach about your specific condition, symptoms and any movement limitations — every session is one-on-one and shaped entirely around what’s right for you that day, never a fixed programme applied to everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a medical treatment for Parkinson’s, arthritis, osteoporosis or stroke recovery?

No. We are a boxing gym, not a medical or clinical provider. Our coaches are trained in adapting boxing fundamentals for these populations, but they are not doctors, physiotherapists or nurses. This training is a supportive fitness activity alongside your existing medical care — never a replacement for it.

I don’t have Parkinson’s — is this still for me?

Yes. This page is written around Parkinson’s specifically, but the same coaching approach is used for arthritis, osteoporosis and stroke-related balance issues, among others. Tell your coach what you’re managing and your sessions will be built around that.

Do I need a doctor’s clearance before starting?

Yes, always. Please speak to your doctor or neurologist before beginning, and let your coach know about your specific symptoms, stage and any movement limitations at your first session.

Is there any contact or sparring?

None. Every session is entirely non-contact — pad work, bag work and footwork drills with your coach. There is no sparring of any kind.

What if I have a bad day and can’t do everything?

That’s completely normal and expected. Every session is one-on-one and adapts in real time to how you’re feeling. Your coach will always meet you where you are that day — there’s no fixed programme you need to keep up with.

Can a caregiver or family member join a session?

Yes. Our 2-on-1 sessions let you share a coach with a partner or caregiver, which many people find helpful both for support and for making it a shared activity.

What is the cancellation policy?

Reschedules and cancellations are fine with at least 2 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less than 2 hours’ notice are unfortunately still billable. The monthly Hybrid Package can be cancelled with 30 days’ notice — no penalties, no lock-in.

What gear do I need?

Comfortable clothes and supportive, flat-soled shoes. Boxing gloves are provided for your sessions. Nothing else is required to get started.
